<p>Embattled football player Ricky Williams has endured a well-publicized battle with social anxiety disorder that is compounded by his celebrity appeal.  At one time he endorsed his success with the drug Paxil.  Ricky continues to overcome his anxieties, but his off-the-field problems have since lead to his suspension from the NFL.</p>

<p>The problem with breathing techniques is that they are hard to implement when experiencing a panic attack.  The shock and fear that impacts your mind and body makes it hard to focus on other tasks.  Since most panic attacks are related to a feared activity, most patients choose to focus on an exit strategy instead of treating the issue at hand.  This is a natural result of the body&#8217;s flight response to escape a dangerous situation.</p>

<p>Some of the most popular medications used to treat panic attacks are sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine, or fluvoxamine, which can help relieve isolated occurrences of anxiety and stress.  These are often initially prescribed to gauge how well a patient reacts to a medication therapy.  Benzodiazepines such as alprazolam and clonazepam are more intense calming agents that are prescribed in more severe cases.  All of these treatments must be used under close supervision to avoid dependency and addiction.  Panic attacks may also recur with heightened severity if this medication is stopped abruptly.  This makes prescription treatments difficult to manage, and they are best utilized with other forms of therapy. </p>
